If you want to be a professional pilot, there are several trends that make flying an even more attractive career choice:

  • As airline pilots reach the mandatory retirement of age 65 more opportunities exist for qualified younger pilots.
  • Many regional airlines are now shifting to smaller service aircraft (regional jets or RJs). This means younger pilots are able to fly jets earlier in their careers.
  • A growing number of small companies and individuals are jointly purchasing corporate jets or other planes and sharing the cost and flight hours - known as fractional ownership. This trend will increase the demand for pilots to fly these aircraft.
  • The demand for air charter/air taxi service jumped after 9/11.  Travelers can fly to more than 5,000 destinations.  Many of which are not served by commercial airlines through charter service.
  • You can become a Certified Flight Instructor and teach others to fly.
  • Expand your job opportunities in law enforcement, the government, emergency and medical services, and travel/tourism.
